May starts with peek at big slate show

GRANVILLE — May is going to start quickly at the Slate Valley Museum, with events Thursday and Friday, including the museum’s monthly First Friday open house from 7 to 9 p.m.

The June First Friday will feature the opening reception for the big “Slate As Muse National Art Exhibition” show, and this month’s event will offer a sneak peek of that exhibition.

Artwork has begun to arrive at the museum from throughout the country for the June event, and visitors will be able to explore the exhibition room work-in-progress and ask guest curator Serena Kovalosky about her creative vision and approach to arranging, hanging, and presenting artwork in a variety of mediums: from paintings, photography and sculpture to encaustic, mosaic and mixed media.

The exhibition room will be closed for the installation after Friday and will re-open next month.

First Friday is a joint event of the Slate Valley and Pember Library and Museum.

On Thursday, Bob Isherwood, the museum’s education coordinator, will hold a brown-bag lunch discussion at noon as part of National Preservation Week.

Isherwood will explore how the Slate Valley Museum is preserving the history of its community, with a focus on labor history.

The Slate Valley Museum is currently working on a project that will identify collections and records from throughout Slate Valley that document the social, cultural, political, and economic factors that affected slate workers, their families, and the companies for which they worked.

“May 1 is also the International Day of the Worker, a day to reflect on labor and the history of immigrant workers who were striving to better their lives in the Slate Valley, sometimes at odds with the management of the quarry and/or mill,” Isherwood said in a press release. “It is a story reflected in the newspapers of the late 19th and early 20th century that has yet to completely unfold within the museum collection.”
