Geological processes act slowly on the clay sediments deposited at the bottom of ancient seas, creating a solid, durable, and unique structure. This is how roofing slate is born, an exceptional rock found in only a few areas of the planet. When slate reaches a higher stage of metamorphic evolution, phyllite appears, even rarer and more unique. Phyllite is harder, denser, and has virtually no water absorption, making it reliable and long-lasting.

The use of phyllite through the years to the most emblematic buildings worldwide has been recognised by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The exclusive list from the IUGS presents stones which have had an heritage issue, a significant architecture, a social and a cultural impact to our human cultures.
